Honor Constitution’s 217th Anniversary by Adhering to its Principles
September 17, 2004
Pasadena, Md.— Michael A. Peroutka and Dr. Chuck Baldwin, Constitution Party presidential and vice-presidential candidates, stated the following about today’s observance of Constitution Day. The U.S. Constitution was ratified on this date in 1787.
“Two hundred and seventeen years ago today, our founding fathers approved the United States Constitution, which gave birth to our federal government. Our Constitution created an unobtrusive and limited federal government that should provide for our common defense and general welfare, and most importantly, that would seek to ‘secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.’
“At the heart of our Constitution is an American understanding of law and government; that our rights are granted to us by God, and that it is the purpose, duty and obligation of our government to secure and defend those rights.
“Sadly, the candidates of both major parties are hard at work trying to extinguish the dying embers of this great American experiment. Their public pledges and promises to continue supporting unconstitutional efforts—such as funding the Department of Education and their ‘bi-partisan’ attack on the First Amendment rights of every American through the so-called Campaign Finance Reform Act—have demonstrated their blatant disregard for the Constitution and its authority.
“As a Constitutional republic, we the people are the sovereign ruling body of this country, not our elected officials. We must, therefore, live up to the challenge to be ever vigilant—and that begins with every American citizen, no matter what their position in society, studying the Constitution and coming to a clear understanding of its purpose and intent.
“In this election year, Americans must realize that our situation will not improve until we elect only those individuals who will remain obedient to their oath of office to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution.
“As president, I promise to always honor my oath. I will also do everything within my power to foster a better understanding of the Constitution among all Americans, but especially among our elected officials.”
